Terrarium

Perhaps you remember a visit I made to the farm last October during which my siblings and I made a terrarium for mama. A lovely, living sort of trifle! Perhaps you would like to know how it is doing?

.....Our terrarium last October.....

We put it together under the tutelage of some instructions from a magazine clipping that mama had. Rocks, sand, dirt, moss, with a cling film "ceiling". It has thrived wonderfully, needing no extra water and providing some pleasant surprises. The moisture collects on the ceiling and comes down in lovely little sprinkling showers if you tap on it. The moss has grown tall. We found we picked up a family of worms that wind their way through the dirt and sand and air it all out nicely. The other morning we looked in and saw tiny snails; one was slowly moving himself along the dirt, his house on his back. I am inspired by the success of this experiment and wish to make another such little ecosystem for my own home at the earliest possible time!

What a beautiful mature terrarium. The moss in my terrariums grows tall like that as well.
